Pequotsepos Hikers

Led by DPNC educator/naturalists, the Pequotsepos hiking group meets on alternate Mondays and Saturdays. Join us for one, all, or as many as you wish. Babies in front or back carries are welcome except on starred hikes (*). Steady rain cancels.

To assist hikers, we are rating the difficulty and pace of hikes as described below:

A rating of ES would be an Easy Slow walk such as Haley Farm. A rating of DS would be a Difficult terrain at a Slow pace such as Lantern Hill.

DIRECTIONS

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Mystic, CT

Description

We are a combination wildlife sanctuary, visitor attraction and educational facility. The Center features all-new exhibits highlighting the habitats and wildlife of southeastern Connecticut, as well as eight miles of trails that wind through a beautiful 300-acre wooded preserve.

Through natural history exhibits, educational classes and outreach programs, we seek to educate visitors of all ages about the unique interrelationships of animals, plants and non-renewable resources.

Location Information

DIRECTIONS FROM I-95 NORTH OR SOUTH
1. Take Exit 90 and follow signs for Route 27 North
2. Travel less than 1/2 mile on Rte. 27, then turn right onto Jerry Browne Rd.
3. Travel 1 mile to a 3-way stop
4. Turn right onto Pequotsepos Rd., then travel 1/2 mile to sharp curve
5. DPNC is immediately on the left after the curve.

Grills Preserve - Westerly Land Trust - Bradford, RI - 482 acres

Description

The 482-acre Grills Preserve has more than 2½ miles of frontage on the Pawcatuck River. It consists of extensive fresh water wetlands, and extensive lagoon, upland forest, and a high hill with exposed bedrock and extensive scenic views. The property was purchased from Richard and Michael Grills in November 2003. Funding is expected from the RI Department of Environmental Management, the Nature Conservancy, the Lattner Foundation and other sources. Location: between the Pawcatuck River and the Amtrak railroad tracks, and between Route 91/216 and McGowan Brook flowing into the River from the State-owned Newton Marsh. There is an extensive trail system, beginning at the public parking area at the end of Bowling Lane. Approximately 6 miles of trails cover the preserve, including a cross country loop that is used by the Westerly High School and Middle School teams.

Take exit 1 for RI-3 toward Hopkinton/Westerly 0.2 mi
Turn left onto RI-3 S/Main St/Nooseneck Hill Rd 1.7 mi
Turn left onto RI-216 S/Ashaway Rd 1.4 mi
Slight left to stay on RI-216 S/Ashaway Rd 0.9 mi
Turn right onto RI-216 S/RI-91 W/Alton Bradford Rd
Continue to follow RI-216 S/RI-91 W 0.5 mi
Slight right onto Main St 482 ft
Take the 1st right onto Bowling Ln/Douglas Park
Continue to follow Bowling Ln for 0.7 mi

Old Trolley Line - North Stonington, CT

Description

This is a great walk that partly follows the old Pawcatuck - Norwich trolley route from the early 1900's. It then turns toward the Shunock River and follows it back into the mill area of historic North Stonington.

Go on I-95
Take exit 92 for CT-2 toward CT-49/No. Stonington/Pawcatuck 0.2 mi
Turn left onto CT-2 W/Liberty St
Continue to follow CT-2 W - 1 mi
At the traffic circle, continue straight onto CT-2 W/Norwich-Westerly Rd/Providence-New London Turnpike
Continue to follow CT-2 W/Norwich-Westerly Rd - 1.3 mi
Slight right onto Main St - 0.3 mi
Destination will be on the right 144 ft

Avalonia Land Conservancy - Perry Natura Area, Stonington, CT - 68 Acres

Description

Former farmland gradually returned to forest with stone walls and old roads; red cedars, red, white, and black oaks and other deciduous trees, cat brier, huckleberry and low bush blueberry understory, bracken; rich bird life. Established trails. East side of North Anguilla Road. Northern boundary is Stonington-North Stonington town line.

To exit 92 for CT-2 toward CT-49/No. Stonington/Pawcatuck 0.2 mi
Turn left onto CT-2 W/Liberty St
Continue to follow CT-2 W 1.0 mi
At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto CT-184 W/Norwich-Westerly Rd/Providence-New London Turnpike
Follow CT-184 W/Providence-New London Turnpike 0.6 mi
Turn left onto N Anguilla Rd
Destination will be on the left 0.6 mi N Anguilla Rd

From Mystic near I-95 exit 90:
Follow CT-27 North on Greenmanville Ave
Continue to follow CT-27 N - 1.4 mi
CT-27 N turns slightly right and becomes Main St - 0.2 mi
Slight right onto N Stonington Rd - 0.5 mi
Turn right onto CT-184 E/New London Turnpike - 0.7 mi
Slight left onto CT-201 N/N Stonington Rd
Continue to follow CT-201 N - 3.2 mi
Go straight on N/Mystic Rd - 0.4 mi to traffic light on Rt 2
Go straight onto Main St that goes through the village of N. Stonington - 0.5 mi
Turn left on Wyassup Rd - 0.7 mi
Left on Ryder - 200 ft
Straight on Hewitt (dirt road) - 0.6 mi to parking area.

Hemlock, pine, tamarack, and spruce plantation among deciduous woodland species; hiking trails.

Park on the right - 1.5 mi

Plimpton Preserve - Lyme, CT

Description

On Sterling City Road about ½ mile from Route 156 (near fairgrounds) This 80-acre preserve protects the view of the ridgeline behind Tiffany Farms as you approach Hamburg from the south on Rt. 156. A trail provides access to a spectacular view during some times of the year.

To exit 75
to merge onto US-1 S/Boston Post Rd toward Flanders/Waterford - 6.6 mi
Turn right onto Town Woods Rd - 2.2 mi
Continue onto Bill Hill Rd - 0.7 mi
Turn right onto CT-156 W/Hamburg Rd - 1.4 mi
